Our client is looking for an experienced Senior Development Chemist based at their organisation near Preston

Reporting to Product Development Manager the purpose of the Development Chemist is to carry out the design, development and preparation of new product formulations ensuring compliance with both regulatory and customer requirements

You must have least 5 years’ experience as a development chemist and have working within the formulation and development of cosmetics and toiletries preferably in the bath, body, hair and skincare products including the transfer of these products to full scale manufacture. You will have in-depth knowledge of raw material availability & functionality and cosmetics regulations

Key Responsibilities: –

  • Design, develop and prepare cosmetic and toiletry formulations meeting project briefs within the budgets provided and in line with legislative guidelines
  • Manage stability and packaging compatibility testing programmes to ensure product quality throughout shelf-life
  • To assess the need for and instigate external product testing where required
  • Perform lab-scale production of in-house formulated products
  • Liaise with and present to both new and existing customers on formulation matters
  • Liaise directly with raw material suppliers to maintain knowledge base of trends, availability and functionality
  • Maintain awareness of new products, technologies and legislation through literature, representatives and courses
  • Liaise directly with the manufacturing and process development departments to assist in the handover process of new products to full scale production advising on scale-up issues and process improvement
  • Support technical information team on major regulatory changes
  • Provide technical advice both internally and externally to customers as required
  • Advise customers on product claims and check artworks for acceptability in line with regulations
  • To prepare bulk specifications for new products
  • Maintain accurate up-to-date records of all work
  • Responsible for the day to day workload of the development lab and technicians in conjunction with other Senior Development Chemists, ensuring deadlines for submissions are met
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties at the request of the Product Development Manager or New Business Development Director

Experience and Qualifications: –

  • Educated to degree level qualification or a Diploma in Cosmetic science – essential
  • Experience in developing cosmetics and toiletry formulations from first principles through to scale-up and subsequent full-scale manufacture – essential
  • Knowledge of UK cosmetic legislation and awareness of European and global market regulatory requirements – essential
  • Experience in presenting products and concepts to customers
  • Demonstrate ability to efficiently plan, organise and manage their own workload proactively and on own initiative plus up to two technicians if required
